The patch looks fine to commit immediately to HEAD and gnome-2-4 branches.

Many thanks for chasing this; possibly there is a better fix for us
though.

May I make a suggestion ?

You might want to add a verbose comment or at least a reference to
this bug to explain why to make that a warning rather than an error.
