Description Lindsay Haisley 2003-10-12 03:39:51 UTC
Earlier versions of Galeon had two global config options which appear to
have been removed from Galeon 1.3.9. These are the configuration options
for smart bookmarks which allow retention and reuse of smart bookmark
history and the option of clearing (or not!) the smart bookmark text data
after each use.

I work with both of these unchecked, by _definite_ intent. I use this
frequently, for instance, if I'm researching something on Google and am
using a search expression with more than a couple of words. I can be
several links away from my search results, decide I need to tweak my
search, and go back to the smart bookmark and make the change quickly
without going back through my page history.

As it is now in Galeon 1.3.9, we have neither the option of keeping the
contents of smart bookmark entry fields across use cycles, nor the option
of maintaining a drop-down history for them.

Please, please, restore at least the ability to have a smart bookmark
history, and preferably both of these features! These are the kinds of
features which make Galeon such an easy, powerful and useful tool for those
of us who do serious Internet research. I don't know why these were dropped.
Comment 1 Crispin Flowerday (not receiving bugmail) 2003-10-12 09:10:29 UTC
The history is in galeon 1.3, you just need to turn it on again (it is
on by default).

gconftool-2 -s -t bool /apps/galeon/Browsing/Bookmarks/smart_bm_history 1

Comment 2 Lindsay Haisley 2003-10-12 16:18:02 UTC
OK, Crispin, I can get at this switch with the GUI gconf editor, too,
although this really ought to be settable via an option in the galeon
UI. Again, the fact that the switch is off may be due to the fact
that I had galeon 1.2 installed on the same box previously and didn't
have the history drop-down enabled since I depended on the field not
being cleared.

I note that the gconf registry also contains a smart_bm_clear boolean
which, unlike the switch to enable the drop-down on the history list,
doesn't seem to work.

Is this also a relic from the previous installation? Would it be too
much to ask the developers to reinstate function for this switch?
Comment 3 Crispin Flowerday (not receiving bugmail) 2003-10-14 09:08:52 UTC
The option for the history disabling the history won't get into the
UI, as there is no obvious place for it, and we are trying to keep
user-visible changes to a minimum.

Changing to enhancement, and re-titling.
Comment 4 Bill Wohler 2004-02-06 19:22:53 UTC
Lindsay isn't the only one who thinks the clearing of the smart
bookmarks is bad. It's so much easier to clear an old query and start
fresh than it is to retype in a slight variation of an old query,
which I do most of the time.
Comment 5 Wolfram Quester 2004-04-22 13:57:40 UTC
I fully agree with Lindsay and Bill that this should be easily configurable via
a gui setting. I agree that there is no obvious place for it. It could be in
general settings, but then this dialog would probably fast be crowded with many
different things. How about introducing a misc or a advanced options dialog?

Galeon has not seen any code changes since May 2010:

This project is not under active development anymore and got recently archived in GNOME Git.

It is currently unlikely that there will be any further active development.

Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect
reality. Please feel free to reopen this bug report in the future if anyone
takes the responsibility for active development again.
