GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 123018
CTRL+F assigned to BOTH "Find..." and "Forward INLINE"
Last modified: 2021-06-01 22:42:10 UTC
Sorry, I'm a newbie at this kind of bug reporting so forgive me for my clumsiness. I use Balsa vers. 2.0.14 on a RH9.x box with Gnome2.2.0 The problem is that the command "CTRL+F" seems to be assigned to BOTH actions: "find..." and "Forward inline". So every time I want to forward something either I have to be either stuck with "forward as Attachment" or use "reply" and change manually the address in "To:". This happens in spite of the fact that I disabled in Balsa Preferences's panel the checkbox saying "forward a mail as attachment instead of quoting" Is this really a bug or some consequence of the caffeine-based power system usually found in some kinds of humanoids? :-) If you need more details, I'll try to be more specific. Thanks In Advance.
Any suggestions what the shortcuts should be?
I'd say that ctrl+F should be assigned only to "find..." For the problem with forwarding as inline versus f. as attachment, I'd suggest to fix first the problem with settings (as said above) then tell the command "forward" to obey those settings. the other kind of "forward" should show the alternative (i.e. - if I set the forward as inline in Balsa settings, the other forward should be set to "forward as attachment and viceversa). For the keys uhmmmm... I really have no idea. Assuming that the "forward" sticks with "F"... the other kind of "forward" should be: Shift+Ctrl+F? (eww) Shift+F? (eww again -- lacks consistency) Alt+F (might clash with other settings like GNOME settings? consistency problem too) no key (meaning that one has to use the menu and select the command) the last solution seems reasonable. But, hey, this is just my opinion :P :-) Hope I've been helpful (to what extent, this I don't know :) Should I open a new bug for the problem of forward settings within Balsa preferences not honored?
That pref setting is poorly documented: it actually controls the action of the toolbar 'forward the current message' button. The menu items `forward attached' and `forward inline' always do what they're advertised to do, regardless of the setting.
.....[being speechless for an istant] thanks for the info, Peter! IMHO, "poorly documented" is an understatement :-) I think I'll stop there, since it looks like it's becoming more a interface design issue than a bug. :-) For the key problem, I don't have much else to propose other than ctrl+alt+F, at this point (hoping this won't drive crazy anyone in the future) Sorry, I'm still a mac user way waaay deep inside :-)
Oh, a mac user...that explains a lot! No offense--I have a couple in my house ;-) I'm breaking out the `forward attached' and `queue mail' entries under their own heading (on the same page) and rewording them: Toolbar Buttons [x] Forward button attaches mail instead of quoting it [ ] Send button queues outgoing mail in outbox instead of sending it That should make it clearer. Thanks for pointing out the confusion!
Peter, your rewording is fine with me (I'm not a native english-user), just please remember to rewrite also the relevant section within Balsa's User Guide files :-) BTW, my forward button (set as inline) works fine, but the forwarded msg wasn't quoted -- is this normal? ...Seems that bugs are like cherries. Well. I'll try to restrain myself from digressing, now. :D
Just a reminder... With Balsa 2.0.15 the rewording proposed by peter has made things a bit clearer, but the "CTRL+F" keys are still being assigned to BOTH "Find" and "Forward as inline..."
Still present as of 2.2.6 Maybe forward inline could be "I"? Better yet, forward attached could be the letter "O" and forward inline could be "Ctrl+O" ("O" as in onward if that helps) Any other ideas?
Ctrl+F removed from forward-inline. We can discuss a replacement here or on the list--the user can always assign an unassigned key at will.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new enhancement request ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/balsa/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
