If you put extra useless dirs in the link it will cause problems.

The link should be:

MASTER_SITES = http://dl.sourceforge.net/abiword/

Both http://dl.sourceforge.net/abiword/ and
http://dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/abiword/ work without problems
for me.

Can there be a difference in the setup of the sourceforge mirrors?

Yes, I think that not all of the sourceforge mirrors have a symlink to
the actual dir. Therefore it tends to fail once in a while depending
on which mirror you get directed too. So I think it would be better if
we use the actual dir. instead of using a symlink to it which may not
exist on all the mirrors.

There was quite a large update to the sourceforge based modules in the Stable
GARNOME series. Can this bug be marked as FIXED now?

Around the time this bug was filed,
MASTER_SITES = http://dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/abiword/

It's since been changed to, and is currently:
GARVERSION = 2.2.5
MASTER_SITES = http://www.abisource.com/downloads/abiword/$(GARVERSION)/source/

Changing from NEEDINFO to FIXED.
