Description Alan Horkan 2003-07-21 16:27:44 UTC
I find the preview in the Theme Manager does not give me enough information
about the theme and I end up trying them all. Changing themes is quite
slow and i think that if the preview showed more/various widgets it might
be less necessary to apply the whole theme.

It strikes me that the current previews are quite small and awkward, and
that the adjacent text is very large and surrounded by lots of whitespace.

it might be better to have a list of themes and a larger preview area
elsewhere in the dialog. (Note that the equivalent Theme/Appearance Dialog
in Windows has quite a large preview area).

This bug wants to be able to configure more theme settings, it might
provide a suitable place to give a more detailed theme preview.

I really should sit down and make a more detailed and thought out report,
consider this only a first opinion.

Any mockups are more than welcome!

First mockup

I tried to get fonts, (in)active window borders, backgrounds, icons in it. Unfortunately this creates a wide window.

second try

A second mockup with rearranged buttons to make the window narrower.
Comment 4 Christoph Brill 2007-04-02 07:43:46 UTC
Good mockups! I basically like the idea.

Would it make sense to change the "Anpassen"/"Customize" pages to show a preview, too? Like previewing icon-sets etc.?
Comment 5 Rimas Kudelis 2007-04-07 06:58:09 UTC
The second one is really nice. But I think it's supposed to also display theme name and description somewhere though. Not that I personally need them, but still... Maybe a text line below the preview of each theme would do?

The mockups look nice, but they are not quite what we are looking for. In 2.19, the theme capplet has been merged with background, ui, and fonts. We don't want completely rebuild the capplet, what we need is just better previews, preferably at the same size they are right now. Attached is a shot of the capplet as it looks in svn at the moment.
Comment 7 Thomas Wood 2008-04-11 16:29:35 UTC
gnome-theme-manager has been superseded by gnome-appearance-properties.
Comment 8 Bastien Nocera 2011-03-17 15:00:22 UTC
Mass move to gnome-tweak-tool, for theme handling bugs.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
However, you are using a version that is too old and not supported anymore. GNOME developers are no longer working on that version, so unfortunately there will not be any bug fixes for the version that you use.

By upgrading to a newer version of GNOME you could receive bug fixes and new functionality. You may need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain a newer version of GNOME.
Please feel free to reopen this bug if the problem still occurs with a newer version of GNOME.
