Description maxx 2003-07-13 15:11:31 UTC
After installing garnome 0.25.0 and then opening up Epiphany and going to
slashdot.org I realized that something had happened to the font - they now
look ugly.

However if I go to Slashdot using the garnome installed mozilla it looks fine.

Also if I unset LD_LIBRARY_PATH before running epiphany the fonts also look
fine.

In the epiphany preferences under fonts and colors I can only select
between the standard font (serif, sans-serif, monospace), and ClearlyU
Alternate Glyphs.

Do you have the "Always use these fonts" preference selected?
Comment 2 maxx 2003-07-14 06:53:38 UTC
I tried both with and without that setting - they look odd both ways.
I'll attach a couple of screenshots later today to illustrate the problem.
Comment 3 Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2003-07-14 10:39:38 UTC
Well if the "Always use these fonts" pref is off (which for most users
it should always be), I'm not sure what can be causing the problem (or
how it can be any different from mozilla).
Comment 4 lwillis 2003-07-14 11:04:38 UTC
Do you have the MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME environment variable set? What are
the results of the following commands:

$ which mozilla
$ which epiphany

What are your PATH, and LD_LIBRARY_PATH variables set to?

Epiphany without "Always use these fonts"
Comment 6 maxx 2003-07-15 17:21:37 UTC
[maxx@ice:~]$ which mozilla
~/garnome/bin/mozilla
[maxx@ice:~]$ which epiphany
~/garnome/bin/epiphany
[maxx@ice:~]$ echo $PATH
/home/maxx/garnome/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/home/maxx/bin:.
[maxx@ice:~]$ echo $MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME

[maxx@ice:~]$ echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
/home/maxx/garnome/lib:
[maxx@ice:~]$

That's all the basic info.

I have attached screenshots of Epiphany with and without "Always use
these fonts" and I have attached a screenshot of Mozilla.

After checking again LD_LIBRARY_PATH has no effect on the fonts - I
must have accidentally run /usr/bin/epiphany instead of the garnome
version to get the nice-looking fonts.
Comment 10 Marco Pesenti Gritti 2003-07-15 22:56:05 UTC
Are you using the same font face/size in mozilla/epiphany ?
The problem about not being able to select more fonts is fixed in 0.8.0
Comment 11 maxx 2003-07-16 17:11:10 UTC
I'll check later with Epiphany 0.8.0 but the fonts I am using are
serif, sans-serif, and monospace.

As I understand it they should be my systems default font, so it
should work. They are the same as the ones I have set in Mozilla.

The font-size I use in Mozilla is 16 and in Epiphany it is 14 -
however if I set it to 16 in Epiphany as well they just worse.
Comment 12 maxx 2003-07-16 17:29:20 UTC
Just tried it with Epiphany 0.8.0 - no difference.

Mass re-assign
Comment 14 Paul Drain 2005-02-04 08:09:06 UTC
Does this still occur on more recent (2.8.2.1 and 2.9.x) release of GARNOME?
Comment 15 Karsten Bräckelmann 2005-07-05 17:34:48 UTC
Another condidate to be closed FIXED.

No additional info for a long time, no complaints either. The bug report is
about a very old, outdated version.

FWIW, I just checked stable GARNOME 2.10.0.something versions of Epiphany and
Firefox. The fonts do look the very same.

The fonts displayed by Epiphany just happen to be a little bit larger, and the
line-height definitely seems to increase more then the font size (added too much
space between lines) when increasing the font size. Anyway, if at all, this
likely is an Epiphany issue and not a GARNOME related bug.
Comment 16 Christian Persch 2005-07-05 17:43:42 UTC
Epiphany font size is in pt, firefox font size in px. So Epiphany's are expected
to be larger at the 'same' value.
