Description Toni Willberg 2003-07-02 11:09:25 UTC
If user opens many tabs, he'll only see something like 10 at the time
(depending on the font).

Mozilla has very nice dynamically adjusted width for tabs; more tabs the
user opens, less width one tab gets.

I'd really like the same implemented in Ephy too.

The debate:
1. pro's: All tabs will always be visible. In general visible clutter
is better than mental clutter.

2. Negatives: changing the tab size dynamically will prevent users
from slamming on the same screen location with the mouse to close
multiple tabs at once. They will have to reposition the mouse
everytime they want to close another tab. I'll let you in on a little
secret though, I sort of think that the window close button should
only close the current tab similar to file->close, in which case close
buttons on tabs are not even needed (await for flame war to begin).
This is starting to sound suspiciously similar to a tabed window
manager though.
Comment 2 Marco Pesenti Gritti 2003-07-02 14:45:00 UTC
We have tab sizing code, it's just matter of adjusting the algorithm.
If someone does a patch for this before 31 July I guess it can go in.
Not high priority for me though.

Consider that this happen only after tabs overflow window size. In
mozilla the first 4 tabs keep the same size.

Btw I'm fine to fix this in 1.0 timeframe if the decision doesnt
depend on the close thing. I think I have really not time for that
discussion ... (sorry)
Comment 4 Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2003-07-02 15:55:20 UTC
I'm ok with this too for 1.0. The only thing i would change would be
to make the minimum tab size based on the screen dimensions rather
than the the window dimensions, that way you can a larger number of
full size tabs per window by making the window larger.
Comment 5 Marco Pesenti Gritti 2003-07-03 19:32:23 UTC
If 72101 patch goes in, I guess we will have to wontfix this one.
Comment 6 Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2003-07-03 20:04:39 UTC
I really doubt it will any time soon. Most of the hig team would
rather avoid any mention of tabs and mdi in the hig since we all
pretty much feel its a work around for poor wm's. Although its worth
noting that seth and I have no problems with it in browsers for the
time being.

Marking as WONTFIX because it's not possible to do it with current gtk
notebook. Next version of gtk will feature a mdi widget, so there will
be the right place to solve this.
Comment 11 spark 2004-03-29 15:56:17 UTC
marco, do you have a bug number for the gtk mdi widget impl?

Comment 14 Frank Murphy 2006-03-22 21:19:16 UTC
Why can gnome-terminal do this, but Epiphany can't?
Comment 15 Reinout van Schouwen 2006-04-01 19:57:34 UTC
The big advantage of the current fixed-size tabs is that you can close a number of tabs in a row with a few clicks, without having to move your mouse.
Comment 16 Gavin Gilmour 2006-06-08 08:39:05 UTC
Another vote for the gnome-terminal behaviour. Sometimes when you open a new link in tab and it's hidden from view, I've seen users continuously click and click it thinking it's not been loaded.

Comment 17 Reinout van Schouwen 2006-06-08 08:47:59 UTC
Gavin, please see the discussion in bug 167693, bug 330676, bug 326953 and bug 110540.
