It seems like the default font size and line weights are geared for if you
are doing multi-page diagrams. I think it would be more appropriate if the
default was for single page diagrams. For example, a single page diagram
looks reasonable to me when using the "flowchart" objects, if the fontsize
is set to 0.30, and the line width is set to 0.05

I agree.  While you can lessen the problem by using 'Fit to Page' from the Page Setup 
menu, the default sizes scattered throughout Dia are too large.  It should be an 
appropriate size for using on a single page.
