Description Jorn Baayen 2003-05-10 19:45:00 UTC
It would rock if ephy had priority text on some toolbar buttons, just like
nautilus. I've found that to make common buttons a whole lot easier to hit,
and it looks really slick too.

this is an egg bug

It's a control center bug, not an egg bug.

Note that there are no plans currently to add priority text to the
EggToolbar. When it was discussed the UI people agreed that priority
text was probably a bad idea.

What are you talking about soren? When Seth calum and I discussed it
on usability list last fall it was decided that text+icons as a
default was a good idea (though seth was considering prioirity text
too), but supporting priority text would be good for other users. In
fact when toolbars were being discussed on gtk-devel last fall i'm
pretty sure one of the design requirements was to support priority
text so that apps like evolution would actually think about using it.

This thread pretty clearly concludes that priority text is a bad idea:

http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-devel-list/2002-September/msg00144.html

also this thread concludes it's a bad idea:

  http://mail.gnome.org/archives/usability/2002-August/msg00085.html

I'd be interested if you can point me to the discussion where you
decided it was a good idea.

(Personally, I'd like to have that feature, but I'm probably not going
to do the work to implement it.)

As I recall those conversations, the conclusion was that prioirity
text was a bad default. At the time seth was considering using it as
the default, but maciej amoung other convinced him this was bad. This
doesn't mean that a pref for it is bad for some users.
