Description Xan Lopez 2003-04-12 23:04:47 UTC
So it seems there are opposed ideas about this. My opinion is that it's an
useful addition (in fact, I think it's a needed one) to the dialog, as that
place is where most of the topics should be created: "I'm gonna bookmark
this page... but it does not fit in any of the topics I have right now, so
I'll create...". You get the idea.
Opinions?

CCing usual UI nazi
Comment 2 Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2003-04-13 22:26:17 UTC
My gut reaction as UI Nazi is against this idea. IMO, the new bookmark
dialog really should serve as an easy way to add a bookmark to the
users collection and is really not the place to add bookmark handeling
features.

Along with this, i imagine that the topics system encourages users to
create a set of topics that he/she will use for most of their
bookmarks. So the general idea is add a new bookmark to an existing
topic. That said we do need a topic for "uncategorized" bookmarks (ie.
bookmarks without existing topics).

all that said, i imagine the ui here to be generally bad. dialogs
poping out of other dialogs is well "bad" and by providing this
feature we will undoubtably fall into the trap of someone wanting the
ability to remove a topic in the new bookmark dialog as well (what
happens when the user adds a topic here, and decided they want to
change it etc.). I guess i'm worried about falling into the typical
file selector mess issue, where the file selector becomes a file manager.

Oh and I should mention, I rather use the space to add a help button,
since I think more "New Users" will find this helpful, since this
dialog will probably be the first time they interact with the ephy
bookmark system.

IMHO, if I can't add a new category, I don't want the dialog on
bookmark creation

Either let me add one in peace and quiet, or let me edit the details
properly.

Just for the sake of mentioning it, it appears that apple tends to
agree with me in the safari new bookmark dialog.

Removing from tracker. I'm not sure what the right thing is here.

For reference:

Phoenix's new bookmark dialog is similar to ours.

IE 6 adds disclosure button that gives the user the ability to add a
bookmark to a folder and create a new folder, by poping up a modal dialog.

I agree with bug reporter. In fact, I was really surprised that I
couldn't add a new Topic/Category in the add dialogue. The reason is
because I use Topics/Categories with my Palm Pilot all the time, and
it has this feature. So do MS Outlook for contacts. I believe
Evolution does, too. They all do it a bit differently, and I don't
have them all in front of me, but I'll tell you the way I think it's
handled the best (and probably hardest to implement.):

In the Category list of the New Bookmark dialog, you add a final entry
that can't be checked, and has a button next to it, like this (pardon
the ASCII art, the ( ) is a checkbox, (the last real categor) and the
[] is a button.)

|...
| ( ) XML
| New Category [Create]
 ----------------------------

Hope you get the picture. The behavior is thus: When you click on the
[Create] button, it creates a new full-fledged Category, highlights
the "New Category" text, for easy typeover replacement. When the user
gets done typing, they hit Enter, the category's checkbox is checked,
and the list gets sorted again.

Hope this makes sense. If you don't like having the button in the
listbox, then you can just make it active if the user selects it and
types over the name.

I agree there should be an easy way to create new topics when adding a
bookmark.

Today I was adding all my bookmarks in Epiphany again (manually, because Epiphany didn't want to import the HTML bookmarks I exported from Konqueror).

During this process of adding a lot of bookmarks I spent quite some time in the "Add Bookmark" dialog, and more than once I wanted to create a new topic while I was in the "Add Bookmark" dialog. However I didn't see a button for adding a new topic.

So I went to Bugzilla to report a bug, but smart as I am, I decided to look for other bug reports first. Then I read this one. After reading it, I figured out that I could type the name of a new topic in the "Topics" field.

It was not obvious to me that it could be done this way. I have a suggestion. The "Topic:" field in the "Add Bookmark" dialog is empty by default. Why not fill the field with the text <type the name of a new topic here, or choose from the list>? Or just place a button for adding a new topic. But as it is currently, the functionality to add a new topic by that method simply was not obvious to me, and I'm not a dumb user.

One more thing I should mention is that before figuring out that you could create a new topic by typing the name there, I did the same before, but I thought that didn't work. To be more precise:

Type something in the topic field and press Enter. Nothing will happen, topic won't be created, because you have to click "Create topic X" in the dropdown below the field. I didn't see that because I was typing very fast and assumed Enter to work.

Long story, hope it makes some sense :)
