Description Roozbeh Pournader 2003-03-10 05:09:09 UTC
I would appreciate if gucharmap gets a snap to the power of 2 feature,
to make the number of cells in each row a power of 2. That is important
since number like 16 and 256 are magic numbers with regard to Unicode, as
Unicode is divided into blocks of 256 and columns of 16. Having arbitrary
number of cells in each row is treating Unicode like a flat space, which is
not.

Let me know if you would phrase the menu item differently.

[ I'll leave it to the maintainer(s) to reopen the bug (or not) since
I don't know whether it would be ok for me to do so. ]

Just wondered whether it wouldn't be better to just make gucharmap
*always* display rows with the number of characters inside a power of two.

Pros:
o One potentially confusing menu item less.
o Problem of original bug-report fixed for everyone without the need
for a special setting.
o Easier to find characters after resizing the window (since
characters do not change position so much).

Cons:
o Number of characters displayed less optimized than it could be.

I personally don't consider the negative aspect to be so serious...
other people may disagree however :)

I wish to second Lars. This should be a default feature.
Comment 4 Christian Rose 2004-01-04 11:47:14 UTC
Lars: Please open a new bug report suggesting that.

Done; see bug #130548.
