GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 103560
nautilus should use startup notification when opening windows
Last modified: 2005-01-22 23:08:26 UTC
Nautilus should use startup notification when opening its own windows, since this can take several seconds. I've learnt that this is implemented on window manager level in gnome 2.2, so it should be easily implemented by a simple window manager call. If this is already being implemented, please ignore.
Using startup notification doesn't really make sense. Since startup notification is meant to give user feedback while an app is loading. What you probably really want are persistent window animations between folders when opening them. See bug 102479.
I want an indication that something is happening, so that I won't try to double click again (thinking that the double click failed). This is of course only needed if it takes noticable time before the window appears (as is the case right now with nautilus). A good way to do this is to use startup notification, opening a nautilus window and opening an application is not that different from a user's point of view.
Hmm, somewhat related so posting followup here. I think it would be consistent with the rest of the desktop if nautilus would show a startup notification if it's launching some other app, e.g. gedit after dblclicking a .txt file. ATM (nautilus-2.6.3) there's not even a busy cursor while gedit is lauching.
Isn't this resolved (as of 2.8.x at least?). Nautilus uses the busy cursor when it loads the contents of a directory, and a pop-up window asking the user if he wants to cancel the operation when it takes time to open a directory. The last comment (startup notification when launching other app) still stands, perhaps this should be filed separatetly?
seems to be fixed with 2.9.2, bug closed. Feel free to reopen if you still get the issue.
