Owen's characterization is correct.

1) The solution lies within gnome-print for the 1.0 series but I doubt anyone
   has the time or inclination to figure out what it needs.
2) The default for an unknown font is fixed
3) The default font is Helvetica 9, this is hard coded in 1.0 (NOTE that
   gnumeric has its own configuration for things like display api so
   9pt == 12pixel).

4) There is not way gnumeric-1.0.x will ever be utf8 clean or using Xft
5) 1.1.x uses pango,
