In GNOME >= 2.4 you can change the icon in gconf using the use_custom_icon key for the object corresponding to the menu. I'm not sure this is WONTFIX: we could add interface to choose the icon.
Ok. I'm thinking of adding a really simple properties window for the button menus. User will be able to choose the icon and change the tooltip. Mark: what do you think? Does it sound reasonable? Btw I have a simple question concerning the code: in applet_callback_callback() (applet.c), why do we call functions to handle the event for some types of object while for drawers and launchers we do this inline? cc'ing usability people to get their input too.
Vincent: yeah, adding a dialog to change the icon sounds reasonable enough. If we decide it isn't important to change the tooltip we could just go with a "Change Icon" menu item rather than a full blown "Properties" dialog.

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old feature requests in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years. If you still use gnome-panel and if you are still requesting this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-panel/-/issues/ Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be implemented.
