This problem still exists in Red Hat Linux 9 with gdm-2.4.1.3-5. All
you need to do to test is move your home directory out of the way and
then try to log in through gdm.

While the problem of not being able to log in with root as home
(though that really should not work, we need a nicer solution). I
think I am however adressing the original problem by adding a
PostLogin script where you can do setup such as mounting a home dir or
some such before
gdm does any user setup

Just tested with Red Hat's latest beta Severn (9.0.93). This bug
still exists. gdm package is gdm-2.4.1.3-8.

Is the PostLogin directory work for this version? Has using PostLogin
to create a temporary home directory in case the real one doesn't
exist been tested?

My situation is this: Your fileserver is down for whatever reason.
Folks demand that even in this case users should be able to log in and
have enough functionality to take an online test, participate in
class, and check email (like with a webmail client). Yeah, this is
the university world.
