GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 98145
system tray icon should stay present in system tray even if gnomeicu is closed
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
If gnomeicu is using the system tray, and the user closes the main window, gnomeicu should NOT exit and continue running in the system tray so the user can reopen it. The new gaim system tray applet works this way.
This is in my opinon bad ui.. Close the window is closing the app. This has already discussed for the applet. BUT, we could have a "minimize to systray".. maybe the minimise button will hide the main window?
Usability people: is there some guidelines we have to follow with the notification area ?
perhaps a preference like the windows AIM has: When you close the main window [ ] - Close gnomeicu completely [ ] - Keep gnomeicu running in the system tray
There's no HIG guidelines for the system tray yet, no... mainly because I've never seen it :) I'm inclined to agree that closing the main window should always Quit the application, though, otherwise you're just breaking users' expectations of what close and minimize do. (Closing the window quits the app, minimizing it hides the window but leaves the app running). I guess we have to ask ourselves if use of the system tray introduces a real requirement for a third option (minimize to tray rather than minimize to window list)? From my experiences on Windoze, I'm not sure that it does... I usually just end up completely confused about where I need to click to get my application window back!

Hey what's about this suggestion: I do fully agree that 'close' should really quit the program. So how about, to have 'minimize' to send the main program window to the system notification area, while open chat windows (if existing) go to the "Window List" applet. The way it is implemented now is in my eyes only double, if I minimize GnomeICU than it goes to the "Window List" applet and there is also an icon in the systray. That makes not much sense.
> This is in my opinon bad ui.. Close the window is closing the app. just a remark: imho many users (often those who have the notification area icon activated) expect their messaging client to behave like a daemon which is running in the background. one can have one or more windows open to access this daemon - contact list or message windows (the latter can even be opened if the contact list window is invisible), but closing such windows does usually not mean stopping a daemon.
