Description peter.bluewin 2018-01-26 13:02:18 UTC
I open an XCF file, created with GIMP 2.8. Edit this file in 2.9 and save it. Then I try to open the file again in GIMP 2.8. After I have open the file in GIMP 2.9 it is not possible to open the XCF file in the official GIMP version 2.8 ?!? So, my file is not useable and only accessible with the inofficial beta version! (that's not true)
I try some other options in the save-dialog box. The result is the same.

Operating System: Windows 10
Hardware: Lenovo Legin Y520, with NVIDIA 1050 Grafik card
Processor: Intel I7

This depends on the features you were using - after all, the file was edited in a development version, so this shouldn't come as a total surprise.

This is not a bug. As Schumaml notes, you probably use new features so it is simply impossible to open in GIMP 2.8.

Reopen your image in GIMP 2.9 and make sure that:

* You don't use any of the new layer modes. In particular, next to the layer mode, there is a small dropdown showing 2 group of modes. Make sure you are in the group "Legacy" and not "Default" (which is an update of all old layer modes as well as new modes).

* you are using the 8-bit gamma precision in menu "Image > Precision".

* when you save, in the "Save Image" dialog, do *NOT* check the checkbox option "Save this XCF file with better but slower compression" at the bottom of the file dialog.

With just these 3 steps checked, you will get back to a file compatible with 2.8. Please check these, resave and retry in GIMP 2.8.
After your confirmation, we will close this report as a NOTABUG. :-)

We had a few reports by people complaining of the same issue.

On one hand it is "normal". We will always ensure compatibility from older to newer XCF files, but we cannot ensure the reverse (or else it means we never add features!).

On the other hand, maybe we could have a slight warning in the save dialog when the image won't be opened by lower version of GIMP (in non-intrusive, i.e. not a popup or anything, just a small text field, likely in the bottom of the save dialog).
This could be a bit friendlier. Though also once we release 2.10, anyway 2.8 should not be supported anymore and it's not like you have to pay to update GIMP. So ideally everyone should just update.

I don't know. I am updating this report's title and keep it opened until we decide of something.

Do we have a way to show the (minimum) XCF version (and derived from that the GIMP version compatibility) while a file is being edited?

Right now, we don't have a single function giving a GimpImage compatibility, but it would be quite easy to write.
