GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 791228
New beautiful 7D scatter plot chart type
Last modified: 2018-05-22 14:32:04 UTC
Created attachment 364960 [details] Example of a humble 4D scatter plot Dear Santa, I've been nice. All year! Please free up your best, coolest, most skilled elf, Jean, to add a beautiful new type of chart to gnumeric. One that visualizes up to ... SEVEN dimensions!!! For example... Imagine a sheet with a row for each child you'll bring gifts to. In each row, the first column is how many times the child was nice last year. This goes on the chart's X axis. The second column, how many times they were naughty! This goes on the Y axis. A third column, their age, goes on the Z axis. A lesser scatter plot is humbly attached. But wait! There's more!!! A fourth column, their latitude, could be the diameter of each dot/bubble. The fifth, sixth and seventh columns? Longitude, number of gifts and how many cookies they left by the chimney last year! They could be the red, green and blue (RGB) color intensities of each dot. Imagine the uses! Math! Science! Beauty! Less time in the sleigh on Christmas eve! Happy holidays, Kingsley
Dear Santa, The comment you now see before you is from Kingsley's twin brother, Basil. He really was nice all last year Feel free to skip my gift if it leaves you and/or cool, talented, Jean more time to implement the beautiful new 7D scatter plot type of chart. Thanks, Basil
Dear Santa, This is Kingsley's other twin brother, Wilson. Basil is right. Kingsley really was nice all last year. Plus, I could use nice, new, beautiful 7D scatter plots too. They'd help me cure aging and stop war. Thanks, Wilson
Yo, Santa! This is Kingsley's other twin brother. My name? "Uni-brow". Give my gift to Kingsley too. I tore tags off furniture. And danced barefoot on shag carpet. U.B.
Is there a point here?

I am not sure that such plots would be easily readable. Just 5 dimensions seem a maximum to me (X, Y, Z, size, and color (with a color scale like the one in the sample).
Hi Jean, Yes, I'm not sure that 7D plots would be easily readable either. But, but, but, to be fair, and honest, and candid, and all those good things... Kingsley's top 4 reasons to consider 7D! 4.) 7D might reveal stuff about some data sets that 5D would not. Like maybe unevenly distributed data. 3.) We won't really know, until we actually see it. 2.) Users could be given the choice of choosing between (2, 3, 4,) 5, 6 and 7D. 1.) "7D" scatter plots would distinguish gnumeric from the uni-brow competition. Thanks, Kingsley
