Description marc 2016-10-10 21:25:32 UTC
Hi

Gimp need an auto align layers tools (Photoshop had it.) It could be very useful when you make photographies.

For example, one technique is to take several (maybe 20) photos and to merge it to obtain a better result. etc. To align it quickly and precisely, it is necessary to have a tool to auto align layers.

To add this function it should be possible to use the algorithm of Hugin (a panorama maker). Hugin already have an automatic layer alignment tool.

Thanks a lot

Marc

You mean you take several photos side by side and having GIMP finding correspondences to obtain a seemingly single long panorama as if it were taken in one shot?

This would be an obviously interesting tool (and/or GEGL operation?). Patches are welcome.

Do we really want to reimplement Hugin there?
Comment 3 Pat David 2016-11-26 15:15:31 UTC
Or even the simpler align_image_stack script bundled in Hugin?
Comment 4 Jehan 2016-11-26 19:55:05 UTC
I don't really know all the tools who do this, neither do I know the algorithms behind and their complexity. But yes if someone wanted to implement this and provide patches, it would be interesting. I would definitely not refuse a good patch for something as useful (and quite common actually. I know a lot of people who do panorama this way) just because another software does this already.

Even a simpler version (for common use cases) would be good as a first step (I would imagine that an advanced software doing this could have many settings).

I don't need to reimplement hugin in gimp. I was just an exemple of what I meen when I said auto align tool.

In fact in photography, there is many reason to align photos (one on each layer).

for exemple, you want to take a building and there are many people front of it. You can take many photo, open it on layers and remove people.

In astrophotography, one technique to reduce electronic noise is to take many (20-30-40 or more )photos and assemble it.

If you whant to realise HDR photo, you need at least 2 photo (and probably more) with different exposures.

But for all this technique, you need a perfect alignment.

And they are lot other technique in photography who need it.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to right patches myself, that why I ask for this function. :-/

If I could, I will be happy to help but not in righting code.

Thanks
