Description Nicolae Crefelean 2014-05-21 17:07:58 UTC
So far I used a lot of MS Office versions, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice.org, Kingsoft Office and a few others and all of them increment numeric cell values by dragging a single cell's "handler" to the right or to the bottom. If you drag it up or left the value will decrement.

Also, if you only want to copy that value to multiple cells, pressing Ctrl before releasing the mouse button will keep the same value for the whole interval. I thought this feature didn't exist in Gnumeric until I asked about it in the IRC channel. So it exists, but you have to add values to two cells and select them both when dragging the handler, so Gnumeric knows you want to increment the values.

For compatibility/usability reasons I would recommend the developers to tweak this feature to the existing behaviour in other office suites, but I have no idea how this would impact the current user base, so it's all up to the developers. At least now I know how to do it in Gnumeric.

Cheers! :)

I would really hate to see that change.
Comment 2 Nicolae Crefelean 2014-05-21 21:12:45 UTC
I completely understand that but you see, people like me, who used other office software, would rather assume features like this are missing and use something else (another software) because the general perception is Gnumeric is less developed than others.

Maybe if this would be configurable (Gnumeric-style/LibreOffice-style) from the settings it would help people to use Gnumeric as they're already used to use similar software.

What would be the point of having several spreadsheet applications with identical GUI, if the basic structure, available functions etc are already nearly the same to foster interoperability?
Comment 4 Nicolae Crefelean 2014-05-25 13:05:42 UTC
For a software that has the vast majority of features just like in the other office suites, it makes no sense to have some features done differently.

Why would anyone mimic so much functionality then stop at some features? I don't know if the Gnumeric team aims for more users, but you can only hope people start with Gnumeric or (less probable) they will search for solutions to do the same things, with Gnumeric, that they got used to in all the other office suites.

So I can't help asking myself if Gnumeric's goal is to be an office-like tool built for its developers or for the rest of the world, the ones that usually start with MS Office or Open/LibreOffice.

Please don't take this comment with any irony or ill will. I'm really puzzled.
