When navigating to the file I want, I choose a link to a Windows file of directory. But Gnumeric opens the link file as if it were a spreadsheet (pretty dumb! Loads garbage.) instead of opening the target.

That sounds more like a gtk/glib issue than a Gnumeric issue.
