Description Luc Pi 2013-06-24 09:12:54 UTC
Currently, there is a single folder icon (theme-able). We can set specific icon for individual folders (properties dialog).

I wish we could set various folder icons in a generic way.

The generic way is described by a rule or pattern.

The thumbnail could be a specific icon, or the result of a thumbnailer.

This is exactly as it works for files (based on mime types) but for folders and based on rules.

Example usage:
- all .attic folders get a specific icon
- all folders under 'git' get a folder icon as themed, with a git logo
- all dot folders get a dimmed icon
- etc.

By using thumbnailers, the only thing requested for nautilus is a way to hook these thumbnailers based on rules.

The general use case is to facilitate navigation through the folder tree and ease identification of the folder we are looking for.

I think that the current nautilus works very well for a reasonable folder tree.

When there is significantly more folders it would help to have more visual clues to know where we are in the tree, and shall we go to reach a specific folder.

There is no standard folder tree, this is why I suggest generic tools/clues.

these are related cases to ease navigation

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
