Description Dan Winship 2012-07-16 15:13:15 UTC
from https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=840408:

Empathy does not connect to irc if nick is already in use, which is understandable and not a bug per se.

The problem lies in empathys unability to reconnect to IRC server after unexpected loss of connection (e.g. unplugged cable). It is fairly reasonable to assume that connection should be restored asap, albeit at the expense of changing nick (adding underscore, number, whatever -- as most other clients do)

[This is mentioned in bug 602911, but that bug mostly seems to be about a different issue.]

There was this attempt to fix it in Telepathy Idle too: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14751
