GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 678336
GIMP doesn't remember window/dock/toolbar setup on start
Last modified: 2018-05-24 13:14:56 UTC
When I start GIMP it resets to what seems like a default toolbar setup. I maximise the window, remove the left panel that says "You can drop dockable dialogs here" and widen the dock on the right. It looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/eCHld.jpg But next time I start GIMP it reverts to this: http://i.imgur.com/l8wXX.jpg The option "Save window positions on exit" is ticked. I have a multi-monitor setup (laptop with widescreen monitor plugged in) but I'm not sure if that would really affect things, at least not the toolbar being shrunk down.
Confirming this bug for the 2.8 Mac build (Parthas build). I moved the left vertical bar for the width to the mostleft to set it on width=0. After restarting GIMP the left docking area is set to a width greater than 0. Only the left side is affected.
Probably the same as bug #666301.
I was about to submit another bug report for this, but since this seems to cover the issue and it's unconfirmed I'll post my findings here: If you don't want to use the left-hand dock, you can't resize it down to a width of zero pixels, otherwise the right-hand dock width is reduced after a restart. Steps to reproduce: 1. Enable single-window mode 2. Move all docks out of the left-hand dock, over to the right-hand side (I had to disable single-window mode to do this, I'm not sure if that's normal) 3. Observe message in the left hand dock "You can drop dockable dialogs here" 4. Resize left-hand dock down to zero width so message is no longer visible 5. Resize right-hand dock so it is your preferred width, remember this width 6. Restart GIMP 7. Observe left-hand dock has enlarged itself again so the message is visible, and the right-hand dock has become much narrower than it was set to in step 5. It seems that if the left-hand dock has a width of zero, it is reset to the default size upon load. This also causes the other docks to shrink their width accordingly. If the left-hand dock (in step 4) is kept at one or two pixels wide, then the dock sizes are restored correctly after a restart. It is only when the dock width is reduced to zero that the user's preferred dock widths are not restored correctly.

The effect occurs on Linux and Mac OS X (native build) and with a single monitor, too.
