GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 672363
GTK+ on Windows does not receive keyboard shortcuts from the On-Screen Keyboard
Last modified: 2018-05-02 15:21:58 UTC
I'm disabled and use the On-Screen Keyboard for typing. Unfortunately, GIMP doesn't recognize keyboard shortcuts from the OSK, and the dialog boxes don't accept the words that are sent from the Text Prediction bar. The dialogs DO accept the individual letters as they're entered from the OSK though which makes the program functional, but adding full OSK compatibility would make usage much easier. Platform: Windows 7 Professional 64
I guess this has to be solved on the toolkit level (unless other Gtk+-based applications get it right already). See also bug #630976
This just got a little more interesting: Shortcut keys work fine using the OSK and Gnumeric, but words from the Text Prediction bar aren't received. So, if neither app processes the Text Prediction entries, then the solution must come from the toolkit level, right? But the shortcut key problem is relevant only to GIMP? An interesting thing about the shortcut key processing in Gnumeric is that it only works if a cell is highlighted and not if you're currently modifying the cell. Should I crosspost this thread to the toolkit developers? Thanks for your quick reply. We should assign this bug report to the gtk+ product, but we'd know to know the Gtk+ version first. On Windows, this is usually easy to determine if the following information is available: - What version of GIMP do you use? - Where did you get the installer from?
Version 2.6.11 I downloaded it from http://www.gimp.org/ Thanks for the followup and please let me know if you need additional information. Hi Bob, Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Please try the unstable GIMP development version 2.7.5 (or later) and report back if the problem still exists, as there will not be any more fixes to the stable GIMP version 2.6.x. Unofficial Windows builds for 2.7.x are available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-win/files/GIMP%20%2B%20GTK%2B%20%28development%20rel.%29/
I removed v2.6.11 to start "fresh" and just installed the 2.7.5 beta. First the good news: The Save As dialog accepts the words from the Text Prediction bar. Bad: The shortcut keys still aren't recognized from the OSK while editing a picture. I didn't test the text box feature in v2.6, but this is what I see in v2.7.5: I select the text tool from the toolbox and then click on the edit window. Resized the text box. Started typing, but nothing appears in the box - however, if I click on word suggested in the Text Prediction bar, the remainder of the word is entered in the text box (ie, with the text box selected, if I type "in" and then click the word "information" on the Text Prediction bar, the text box shows "formation"). Hope this helps and let me know if I can further help. Indeed a GTK+ problem, reassigning.
Sorry this causes you trouble. I think it's the same root cause as Bug 630976, which unfortunately doesn't seem to have anyone who's had the required knowledge/time to work on it. However, it seems worth leaving open in case it's not the same, and maybe has a simpler fix than needing a full a11y stack on win32
I would also appreciate confirmation if anyone has tested an equivalent setup on GTK+ 3 and can confirm whether it's the same or different in this regard.
