Description Pedro Villavicencio 2011-06-28 11:19:39 UTC
this report has been filed here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit/+bug/796076

"Ex.
gksudo gedit /etc/fstab will open fstab successfully but will also try to open "Untitled Document 1" at the same time
If just running gksudo gedit than you'll get "Untitled Document 1" that never does fully open (become writable"
Comment 1 Derek White 2011-11-15 06:09:04 UTC
I can confirm this:

$ gedit # opens untitled document
$ gedit /path/to/file  # opens file
$ sudo gedit /path/to/file  # opens file
$ gksu gedit /path/to/file # opens file & untitled document
$ gksudo gedit /path/to/file # opens file & untitled document

gedit 3.0.6

I have seen this bug listed on the Ubuntu bugs (#880038). I run Fedora 15 x64, and x32, and can duplicate the problem when logged in as root, or user, on both machines. I generally open files from the Gnome, or KDE file manager, either right clicking and selecting "Open With", or left clicking. This always opens an untitled document.

I have been using gedit for years, and only started experiencing this problem with V3.0.x. Older versions didn't used to ask to save new, totally blank files to my knowledge either.
