GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 637597
libgweather getting old forecasts for all of New York City
Last modified: 2021-06-09 21:04:50 UTC
The forecast for Queens, NY (NOAA zone NYZ076) is used for all 3 NYC locations supported by libgweather: KNYC, KLGA, and KJFK. From the modification dates at http://weather.noaa.gov/pub/data/forecasts/zone/ny/, It looks like the NOAA stopped updating NYZ076 on December 3. Instead, they've split Queens into separate northern and southern forecasts at NYZ176 and NYZ178. The result is that applications using libgweather to get forecasts for New York City get the old, December 3rd forecast. I suggest that the zone for KNYC (Central Park) be changed to NYZ072 (Manhattan), KLGA to NYZ176 (northern Queens) and KJFK to NYZ178 (southern Queens). It also looks like the NOAA split up Nassau county as well (NYZ077). I suggest the one location that uses NYZ077, KFRG, be changed to use NYZ179, southern Nassau. In short: KNYC -> NYZ072 KLGA -> NYZ176 KJFK -> NYZ178 KFRG -> NYZ179
This bug also affects me. I have not been able to update my forecasts since Dec. 3, 2010. There are numerous threads on the Ubuntu forums web site that also address this problem from other users in New York. I live near Kennedy Air port (Long Beach) but am now using the location from Islip McArthur Air port to get weather updates. This is not as accurate a location for me. Kennedy is much better.
This bug has existed for at least the last five months without a fix supplied in gnome updates. The solution posted by bgruber above fixes the problem - for which I give thanks.
