Description iain 2010-05-20 11:12:33 UTC
Seriously, it has now replaced scorpions and addler-lizards as my nightmare du jour.

Please, take it out behind the shed and put a bullet through its head, for the good of humanity
Comment 1 Nick Richards 2010-05-20 11:21:34 UTC
I support this reasonable request.
Comment 2 Hylke Bons 2010-05-20 11:27:31 UTC
I do as well. Shouldn't we stop it at the source and assassinate its creator whom isn't me?
Comment 3 Guillaume Desmottes 2010-05-21 07:44:11 UTC
Suggestion? Just remove the cute koala or replace it with something else?
Comment 4 iain 2010-05-21 10:33:26 UTC
what cute koala?
if there was a cute koala i wouldn't filing this bug.
i dont care if you remove the freaky scary thing that now causes me to wake at 5am in a sweat or replace it with something else(*), it just needs to go.

(*)assuming that replacement isnt as freaky or scary
Comment 5 Felix Kaser 2010-05-21 10:37:32 UTC
I would replace it with something representative for people nearby. I see no connection between people nearby and a koala :)
Comment 6 Will Thompson 2010-05-21 19:13:27 UTC
Iain, I'm happy to report that you can preserve your 5am sweats long after this icon is removed from Empathy with the first product in my brand-new Telepathy store: http://is.gd/cjoQ8

I don't think I've ever told you this before Will, but I hate you...
Comment 8 Nick Richards 2010-05-25 15:17:23 UTC
Indeed, it would be good if there were a less abstract visual representation of the magic that is chatting with someone nearby whom you sort of know, but don't want to talk to in person.
Comment 9 Hylke Bons 2010-05-25 15:18:32 UTC
"no-icon" would be appropriate here.
Comment 10 Travis Reitter 2010-08-30 22:27:07 UTC
Wait, it's a koala now? I always thought it was a tarsier or a slow loris.

According to this Identi.ca conversation, it's apparently a Wooly Lemur:
https://identi.ca/conversation/64472028#notice-65231564 (by the way the re-dent was of a message that I shared in the first place ;) )

The sooner that thing dies in the eternal flames of Hell, the better... either that or someone just removes/replaces it. Anything will do. In all seriousness though, what does any animal have to do with talking to people over your local network? Not only is the picture inappropriate for the type of account it's supposed to represent, but it's freaking creepy o_o...

Icon graphic

Hello all -- I've created a possible new graphic to replace the Hypno Koala nightmare which I have attached. Please indicate if it is suitable to relieving your sleeping dilemma

It doesn't look bad, but I'm not seeing an immediate connection between the icon and the account type. Either way, it's better than the hypno-koala-leemur-thing.

I have no authority in this project and this is just my independent observation.

Describing a "local network" in an icon is kind of hard, and I don't think there's some other metaphor out there that will be much better.

The 16x16 could use some better pixel aligning, but I'm all for using it.

Good night iain :)
Comment 16 Nick Richards 2011-10-07 08:41:14 UTC
Ryan, we considered a number of options and metaphors and this one won out as a "brand for a thing with no brand". Overtly network related metaphors just didn't appear to make sense in the context that you see this (accounts capplet etc.) and in some possible versions could even be confusing ("wait, it's telling me i'm not online, but i've got an icon here that looks like ethernet"). The other more literal items just didn't scale down to 16x16 in any kind of sane way. Which is a shame really.

Hylke, good feedback on the pixel alignment, thanks.
Comment 17 Guillaume Desmottes 2011-10-11 18:39:14 UTC
I agree, it's definitely an improvement.

Can you please provide a new version improving the pixel alignement? Also, shouldn't smaller versions have less spikes? They are not very visible atm.

Fix to 16x16

I experimented with removing some of the rods as initially I agreed that they might not be needed due to the size. I found that removing them, even if they are barely visible, unbalances the icons though - so for now they will be left in

Fix to 16x16 SVG
Comment 20 Guillaume Desmottes 2011-10-11 22:48:38 UTC
Thanks! Could you please provide one png for each size and one svg containing the big one so I can replace the current Empathy files?
I guess it's trivial but I never used inkscape. :)

Improve iain sleeping pattern

The Hypno Koala was making iain wake up in sweat and with his heart
pounding at unreasonable hours.

Nobody wants that.

The Hypno Koala has served his duty and it's now time for retirement.

Its replacement was designed and drawn by:
  Cyrene Domogalla <cyrene.domogalla@intel.com>

I've included the source SVG in the commit. To generate icons from it,
one needs to use the render-icon-theme.py script to generate the 16x16,
24x24, 32x32 and 48x48 versions, the 22x22 one was generated by the
generate-png.sh script in data/icons.

Comment 22 Damien Lespiau 2011-10-13 20:05:58 UTC
Note that I actually did not test the patch. I merely replaced the old icons with the new ones and included the SVG source with a slight modification from the ones attached above: I added the context and name labels as these elements are parsed by the render-icon-theme.py script to generate the icon.

An additional note is that currently empathy.svg and local-xmpp.svg are disted while none of those seems to be used at build time. It might be desirable to not dist those SVG sources and be happy with just having them in the git repository.
Comment 23 Guillaume Desmottes 2011-10-13 20:46:28 UTC
This is done. I merged this patch to master. This is the end of an era.

Thanks a lot guys!
