GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 613165
Not possible to add groups in contact list
Last modified: 2018-05-22 14:06:56 UTC
This report was originally filed at: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/540311 In my Empathy (version 2.29.92-0ubuntu2 on Lucid), I have two contact groups which I once created myself I believe. However, I want to add another group. I cannot find a way to add such a group; I can only remove existing groups by right clicking on the name.
right click on a contact, click edit and type something in the field before the button "add group" and you will be able to add a group. When adding a new contact you also have the option to add a new group.
maybe this issue could be considered as a usability, because is not so logical or straighforward to find this function. Maybe add a buttom under Edit or another visible place could improve the experience.
From a usability perspective, Victor has a valid point here. The current method of adding a new group isn't that clear. To some degree I can understand the rational of tying the method to either adding or editing a contacts details, however to many users this wouldn't and therefore not logical. Adding the ability to add/edit a group & contact via the right click context menu on the contact list would be an improvement.
This bug is 2 years old, but I see no progress on it. I just tried Empathy for the first time, and despite being a very logical person (and a developer, and a UI developer at that!) I was completely unable to figure this out for my use case. I started Empathy and wanted to reorganize my giant list of users. I was not adding any new users and it did not make sense to me to choose 'edit' for a user, as I am not editing the contact information itself just moving it to another group. Thus I did not even bother clicking 'Edit' to see that you can also organize the groups there.
This bug is pretty similar to bug #669747
