It is very annoying to move each item around every time one changes something in the panel that frees up some space.

The solution I propose is to give each panel item gravitation. An item would be able to gravitate left, center or right. Maybe, additionally one could establish pinpoints to which items can gravitate to, in case none of the alignments above satisfy the positioning needs.
