I am aware that GHex is not an official part of GNOME but it would be more than welcome to clean up the codebase, also for GNOME distributors.

Bug #525072 has a patch by the ghex developer for over a year now. I wonder what the hold-up is.

well, I'm really only listed as a developer since I got stuck making a few changes to it.  There's really no active developers of ghex at the moment.
