GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 580759
Add more support for ASS subtitles
Last modified: 2018-09-21 16:03:28 UTC
I would like to have a better handling of ASS subtitles, including fonts, colors, karaoke effects and such, much like AegiSub.
Thanks for the report, This is a needed feature. It does require a major change in the Gnome Subtitles backend (SubLib). Support for SSA should also be improved.

Three years later ;-) Is there a chance that the backend will be changed to manage formatted subs or is its development stopped?
Hi, Well development didn't actually stop, but it's going at a slow pace. I'm the only maintainer, so my focus is usually on the most critical bugs. Part of the real work has been done with some patch contributions from the community. We've also had a few/rare monetary contributions that motivated work on some bugs. So that's why no progress has been made yet on this bug... and others alike :-(
Thanks for you reply. It is a pity that there's no one helping with developing this great piece of software. I'd like to help but I'm not a programmer :-( But thanks for all the work you've done so far!
Thanks for all the compliments. Well yeah, I'd sure like to see this following a different path, but let's hope for the best. ;-) Cheers
I'd like at least to add ASS styles. Someone can show me where I must put my hands in the source code?
Hi Lucas, You have to fumble at least SubLib :-) I will happy to help. First, discuss and agree the format specification. Is there a good current specification? http://matroska.org/technical/specs/subtitles/ssa.html http://moodub.free.fr/video/ass-specs.doc Do these names (ssa and ass) are used interchangeably? Do you need to create a new format ASS regardless of SSA? Please send me at least one file to test, and write briefly what is missing in the GS. I know roughly what is missing, but what do you think is most important. What should be done first? Cheers.
Actually, the most complete specification comes from Aegisub (they were the ones who extended SSA into ASS (which stands for Advanced SubStation Alpha version 4, actually): http://docs.aegisub.org/manual/ASS_Tags
Reply to #Comment 8: The official ASS specs are in the second link, and it is backward compatible. GS already write the Default ASS style - even if with strange colours - but don't allow you to edit it, and to define other styles and apply them to subtitles. This is what I want to add. An option to save global ASS styles so you can apply them to other subtitles is good too. See Section 5 and this example: ASS subs: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/33183126/FRANCESCO%20DE%20CARLO_%20AVETRANA.ass Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCH__-sXQMU Reply to #Comment 9: The only thing I really want to implement are styles. I don't like hard coding, sorry.
OK. Thus I thought, but I wanted to be sure. For now, we forget about AegiSub and Sub Station Alpha v4.00 (without plus). Now we are talking only about improving the existing format in GS - Advanced SubStation Alpha v4.00+. I can deal with SubLib ( I'm working under Windows), but someone else needs to improve UI (HeadersDialog.glade, HeadersDialog.cs and connections). Could you do it Lucas?
Comment from bug #686994: «possibility to change the position of the subtitles, e.g. the subtitles could be moved to the top of the frame»
