Description Dimon Limon 2008-09-28 09:22:04 UTC
Hi,

I am experiencing the following problem:

When I try to open or create a note via Gnome-Do, another instance of Tomboy is appearing in the System Tray although the Tomboy Gnome applet is already running. This issue happens with Tomboy 0.10.2 and 0.12.0, other versions were not tested.

~/.tomboy.log: http://www.box.net/shared/cjgoqog112

After filling a Bug Report for Gnome-Do it turned out, that it's very likely DBus's fault, as you can see in the .log.

This bug may be Ubuntu-specific. I have heard reports from two people, one on 32-bit Ubuntu Hardy with Tomboy 0.10.2, and one on 64-bit Ubuntu Hardy with Tomboy 0.12.0.
Comment 4 Sandy Armstrong 2008-09-28 13:29:10 UTC
Dimon, how are you getting 0.12.0 on Hardy? A backports repository, PPA, or building from source? I'll test first with whatever is the latest and greated in the main Hardy repos.
Comment 5 Dimon Limon 2008-09-28 13:48:02 UTC
Hi,

I have installed 0.12.0 via this repository:

http://ubuntu.schmidtke-hb.de/paketuebersicht

But with the version of Tomboy that is installed by default in hardy (0.10.2), I got the same problem.
Comment 6 Sandy Armstrong 2008-09-28 14:07:55 UTC
Works fine out-of-the-box on a fresh 32-bit Hardy install with Tomboy 0.10.2. Now running updates...
Comment 7 Sandy Armstrong 2008-09-28 14:37:45 UTC
Steps to reproduce problem:

1. Add Tomboy to panel.
2. Log out.
3. Log back in.

Problem only appears after step 3. If you restart in step 2 instead of logging out, it seems to work fine. Only reproduced in Hardy so far, and only when running as a panel applet.
Comment 8 Dimon Limon 2008-09-28 14:40:14 UTC
Well, it worked also fine for some moments out of the box, but after the updates...it won't.

Main, universe, restricted and multiverse enabled.

Security, updates and backports selected.
Comment 9 Sandy Armstrong 2008-09-28 14:44:01 UTC
Dimon: I know I asked you this before, but just to be sure...if you quit Tomboy and remove it from the panel, and then just run it from the command line, do you get the error about loading the remote control?
Comment 10 Sandy Armstrong 2008-09-28 14:49:50 UTC
Just a note, this may be related to bug #549650 and bug #484072.
Comment 11 Dimon Limon 2008-09-28 14:51:10 UTC
Removed the Tomboy applet and then used terminal:

In that case, Dimon, until this is fixed, I recommend you stop using Tomboy as panel applet, and instead run it in the notification area. In GNOME, you would add it as a startup program using the Sessions dialog (somewhere in preferences).

I cannot reproduce this in openSUSE 11. And as far as I can tell, the Hardy package for 0.10.2 [ http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy-updates/tomboy ] is almost identical to upstream Tomboy. And both openSUSE 11 and Hardy are using ndesk-dbus 0.6.0 and ndesk-dbus-glib 0.4.1, however I have not investigated patches that each distro may be applying to them.

It's not impossible that this is a Tomboy problem, but at this point I can't rule out an issue with ndesk-dbus or the GNOME panel/session, either.

Hi, thanks four your encouragement.

I will use temporarelly Tomboy in the system tray and hoping for a soon fix.
Comment 14 Sandy Armstrong 2008-09-28 18:16:00 UTC
Extremely quick test in Intrepid Alpha 6 shows that I can't reproduce the bug there. Will investigate more later.
Comment 15 Jakub 'Livio' Rusinek 2008-09-28 18:48:48 UTC
Sandy, it's not problem that can be noticed everytime. It's not frequent situation.

It happened every time in Hardy for me. Are you able to reproduce in Intrepid?
Comment 17 Sandy Armstrong 2008-09-28 22:10:32 UTC
By "it" I mean the steps described in comment #7.
Comment 18 Jakub 'Livio' Rusinek 2008-09-28 22:36:16 UTC
I don't use Ubuntu. And - it's true for me @ openSUSE 11.0.
