to allow the side-by-side view of exif data and picture having the exif sidebar as a plugin would be great.

I fully agree. Removing this sidebar was a fatal mistake as far as I am concerned; reason enough to deinstall eog.

The eog-plugins packages contains a plugin (exif-display) that shows a few selected Exif values in the sidebar.

This has become even more obsolete now as with the latest development version we show the metadata summaries in the sidebar again.
