Description Björn Martensen 2008-04-07 14:16:14 UTC
i don't really know what is causing the problem, but with metacity 2.23.x sometimes the whole desktop seems frozen and no input is possible anymore, neither mouse nor keyboard.
i have to switch to a tty and kill metacity. it is restarted automatically and things work again until it happens again. 2.22 doesn't show this.

i got this quite often after closing a modal dialog window. are there any logs for metacity anywhere?

Instructions are here:
http://blogs.gnome.org/metacity/2008/03/07/logging/

Feel free to mail the logfile to me or some other developer if you don't want to attach it here. I haven't heard any similar reports, but this is clearly something that needs tracking down as soon as possible.

(Björn has sent me the logfile)

Maybe bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=528787 is a duplicate of this one? I see the same issue hapenning, more frequently, but not limited to modal dialogs. I only got this problem with compositing enabled until now.

I'll try to capture a log with the instructions posted.

Log generated when Metacity froze

Started metacity with

METACITY_VERBOSE=1 METACITY_USE_LOGFILE=1 metacity --replace

And then proceded to fast switch windows. As expected, it froze. Compositing was enabled, compiled from svn rev. 3698. This always happened since 2.23

Maybe it would be good to have a signal which when sent to the root window caused a backtrace, or something.
Comment 6 Björn Martensen 2008-07-04 05:47:15 UTC
this was actually a dup of http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=528787, so it's been fixed for some time now. sorry to not report that.
