GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 475536
Chess usability issues
Last modified: 2007-11-08 03:07:50 UTC
This bug has been filled here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-chess/+bug/138574 "There are a few things with Chess we should reconsider: When you start a new game, chess opens up the previous game you closed. Even if you quit in frustration vs the computer after you were certain to lose. If I wanted the old game I closed I would load it myself. Instead, the game should open with a new game using sensible settings - a reasonable default would be the settings of the previous game played (though, perhaps, computer vs computer games shouldn't start automatically.) Worse still, there is no obvious way to close the loaded game; you must click Game->end game. Starting a new game will unexpectedly shrink the board and open a tab - with no close box for the old one. We should seriously consider eliminating the tab functionality from chess altogether. Chess isn't like Firefox; a user who wants two separate games can very easily open the program twice, and unlike web browsing almost no one will want to rapidly hop between them."
OK let's tackle these point by point... 1. Opening previous games: Chess automatically saves any games without asking. This has been improved in 2.20. Completed games do not reappear when restarting and a game can be terminated at any time by pressing the resign button. 2. Open with a new game: This is a duplicate of bug 446950 3. Closing games: See point 1 4. Remove tabs: Agreed, these have been removed from 2.20 Marking this bug as a duplicate of 446950 as the other points should fixed. Please re-open if you feel these points have not been addressed. Cheers! *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 446950 ***
Thank you, I appreciate the changes. Bug 446950 should be closed, though.
Patience, patience! ;) 446950 has been partially implemented in the last minute... You're always welcome to contribute time/money to getting these fixed!
