gnumeric 'Insert->Image', chose your image file and press 'Open' in the file chooser.
Now you have sheet without image and 'X'-form pointer.
It seems to be not so obvious that one need to click (or drag) to insert an image.

It would be nice to change pointer shape to something more intuitive and maybe add some tooltip like 'Click or drag to insert image'
