Description Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay 2007-07-10 04:45:30 UTC
Details on Jack Retasking are available at http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-009244.htm and http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/hdaudio.htm. This is an RFE to enable a pop up notification that provides visual cues to the user when Jack retasking is undertaken. Currently although Jack retasking is supposed to work, the user does not have visual cues that retasking has already happened

Actually, we could have a sound that says "if you want to use the microphone, say 'microphone' in the microphone". And use grecord to record the reply, that would then be analyzed by the new gnome-voice-recognition applet!

Lucas is fan of this idea. He'd like to make use of the vumeter in some way.

I propose we discuss this in the next membership committee meeting.

I tried asking this directly by email to a person but got no reply, so I'm asking it here...

Is this a real bug or just some GUADEC attendees' private joke?

I need to know if I have to get a mic and find a way to record sound and encode oggs or if I can disregard this issue altogether.

Thank you for clarifying.

Then please give a summary of what the hell you want to accomplish with these i18n'ed sounds that pronounce variations of "microphone" in bunches of $LANGs, and what that has to do with jack (not part of gnome), retasking and pop-ups and how drunk Danilo fits in there.

I'm confused.
Comment 49 Behdad Esfahbod 2007-07-30 00:16:12 UTC
Sorry Ronald, the comments and attachments are all GUADEC joke, but as far as I know the original bug is not. Vincent had no idea what the bug is about either, but it was just a random bug he picked.

Since I filed the bug, here's what my expectations were (before it became the GUADEC joke that is). With jack retasking being a common feature of boards shipped (primarily by Intel), it would be a good-to-have thing if the user received a visual pop up notification that the jack retasking has been done/is underway ie. someone slipped in a microphone into a speaker jack or vice-versa. I think there is a mockup of the pop-up done somewhere within the attachment cascade.
Comment 51 Ronald Bultje 2007-07-30 04:21:11 UTC
We should probably open a new bug. :-). I understand the original one is not a guadec joke, most comments are. It's too much here to continue and make sense of. We can keep the other one open for laughs.

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=461684 is filed as a duplicate of this same (I hope fingers crossed that we don't end up having the same laughs)

Comment 53 Behdad Esfahbod 2007-07-30 05:12:11 UTC
So, what exactly is jack retasking?
Comment 54 Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay 2007-07-30 05:17:11 UTC
(In reply to comment #53)
> So, what exactly is jack retasking?
>

You shove a microphone into the speaker jack and the audio bits recognise it as a device from which to process input stream.

http://www.behardware.com/articles/555-3/intel-high-definition-dio.html has some details as have the following:

http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-009244.htm
http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/hdaudio.htm

On Microsoft platforms, doing a jack retask pops up a notification somewhat similar to the mockup that is attached on this thread. Would be a good visual cue for the end user in GNOME
Comment 55 Vincent Untz 2007-07-30 07:17:32 UTC
Behdad: it was not a random bug, we were looking at gnome-media bugs.

Sankarshan: what's the point of the popup? Really, if you have jack retasking, as far as I understand it, this means that it will work. Why show a popup when you plug the microphone into the speaker jack if it's working anyway?
Comment 56 Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay 2007-07-30 07:25:56 UTC
(In reply to comment #55)

> Sankarshan: what's the point of the popup? Really, if you have jack retasking,
> as far as I understand it, this means that it will work. Why show a popup when
> you plug the microphone into the speaker jack if it's working anyway?

The Jack Retasking thing from an input or output stream perspective makes the colored jack bits redundant. However, a pop up allows a visual clue that a device (or another device) has been plugged in without physically looking around as to what is plugged in. eg. I have a speaker plugged in, then add a microphone (the pop up does allow me to figure what all devices I have in). A pop-up information allowing the user to see at a glance about devices would be helpful is what I think.

Comment 57 Luis Menina 2007-08-01 12:11:24 UTC
Please don't overwhelm my desktop with useless notifications. Useless notifications are even worse than missing ones. Just because Windows does it does not mean it's the way to go (remember the "you have unused icons on your desktop" ?). How useful would be "you have inserted a cd" notification ? Just do the damn right thing and don't bother the user.

> May I suggest that our tools should support it for other platforms or when ALSA

We can't design an API before it's supported by the layers below. When a non-Linux platform or ALSA supports it, then we'll be able to add this ability.
