They support some hacked up version of MP3, AAC for some revisions of the firmware.

There's Java code to do it at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/nwe00xmp3man

and some C code (and an outdated gnome-vfs module!) at:

and some sort of command-line tool:

Looks far from mature, but I guess that you need to start somewhere ;)
