Description R Harris 2006-10-06 01:15:50 UTC
Please describe the problem:
.raf (RAW) files from a FujiFilm E900 include an embedded thumbnail, which is
a 1600 x 1200 JPEG (somewhat smaller than the 3460 x 2607 "real" image). It is this thumbnail that f-spot uses in not only the "Browse" mode but also (and crucially) the "Edit Photo" mode.

There can be a substantial difference between the embedded JPEG and the "parent" bitmap; of the two, it is the latter that is arguably the more important. This bug means that f-spot is incapable of showing the high definition image.

Steps to reproduce:
It's been quite tricky to demonstrate that this is happening; I hoping that
this can be confirmed by inspection of the code.

I seem to have demonstrated this by taking the embedded thumbnail from one .raf file and substituting it for the thumbnail in another. Whilst I cannot yet make a Frankenstein image that 'dcraw' parses satisfactorily, I nonetheless find that f-spot displays the thumbnail and not the bitmap.

Actual results:

Expected results:

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

Other information:
I noticed this when viewing an image for which the thumbnail seemed (unusually) much better than the bitmap image. This meant that I could not use f-spot to differentiate between good and bad pictures, in terms of image quality.

f-spot does in fact display the thumbnail right now, the editing code for raw images isn't complete and when it is it will use the actual raw data when editing.

Do you still have the problem with recent version of f-spot?
Someone lately filed a bug about raf files not showing thumbnails BUT correctly showing real image (bug 505965).

Could you give a try?
Thanks.

I tried it today, built from source, 0.5.0.3

it still shows the thumbnail.

now look, if this is considered an enhancement (and has been for the last 16 months) rather than a major at least, then it shouldn't say on the website that f-spot reads RAW. What's a RAW reader that doesn't read RAW? hmm.

Bug 590150 will fix this.

F-Spot has moved to https://github.com/f-spot/f-spot/issues

If this Bugzilla ticket is still valid in a recent version of F-Spot, please feel free to post this topic as a ticket in the F-Spot project on GitHub.

Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping as we are planning to shut down GNOME Bugzilla in favor of GNOME Gitlab.
