GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 353846
Doesn't load external subtitles
Last modified: 2006-09-30 15:59:41 UTC
Hello. This a bug reported by an Ubuntu user. You can find the original bug report at http://launchpad.net/bugs/57398 . "The latest version of totem (1.5.92) no longer loads external .srt subtitle files. The files are standard subtitle files of the format: ----------- begin subtitle excerpt ------------------ 1 00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:11,000 Subtitles by IRNBRU, Spec and others Please repost corrections on extratitles 2 00:02:02,900 --> 00:02:05,990 On January 6th 1917 3 00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:10,200 Five soldiers condemned to death were lead to the sector of Bouchavel, -------------- end subtitle excerpt ---------------- I tried specifying the file name on the command prompt but then it does not even play the video." Later on, the reporter says that they are using totem-xine, and that this worked with 1.4.
Please attach the output of "totem --debug" while trying to play this file.
From the Ubuntu bug: "> Does it happen with totem-gstreamer too? Do you have an URI to download an example maybe? ... With totem-gstreamer they work most of the time but often I get an "Internal data flow error" (screenshot attached). When that error appears if I just click ok and then click on the play button, it works and the subtitles show up fine. That error only appears with movies that have subtitles. With totem-xine the subtitles do not appear at all, but I also do not get that error ever. This bug happens with any .srt file. I've attached part of one file here. All you need to do is rename the file to the same name as the .avi file that you are playing and put them in the same directory. Then the subs should appear at the time intervals specified in the .srt file. So for the attached file test.srt, just put it inside a directory with a movie called test.avi or test.mpg and the subtitles should appear. http://librarian.launchpad.net/4098965/test.srt subtitle file ..." Using that srt example with a video and running totem --debug video, the log mentions that: "... libsputext: decoder data [Boy ...] libsputext: mode 1 timing 113660->114800 ..." There is no "Boy..." text displayed on the video though
I encounter this problem with version 1.4.5 of Totem (Gstreamer backend). I get the "Internal data flow error" message. It seems to happen a lot more with version 2.16.1.

This means that it's a problem with xine-lib. Please file a bug directly with xine-lib, following the instructions at: http://www.gnome.org/projects/totem/#bugs
