GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 330070
f-spot db merge
Last modified: 2008-09-15 09:40:14 UTC
A killer feature would be to be able to have f-spot merge database. I'll explain why. Imagine the following scenario: the photographer has all his picture on a big hard drive on his desktop machine. It is usually from there that he manages his collection. But he has to travel. For that he has a laptop with f-spot. He does the editing during his trip. When he comes back, he wants to push the database on the laptop to the database on the desktop and have it merged. Not only the pictures, but all the metadata like tags and everything. For that f-spot could provide a "mergo to remote database" feature who would copy the files and the metadata to the main machine from the laptop. Bonus point to have it sync bidirectionally.
As far as I understand F-Spot is supposed to store all information about the picture in the picture as well as in the local sqlite database. In the picture for permanent backup, and easy transfere between computers and systems. In the sqlite database for quick access to the various tags. Every time you store a tag or something per picture, this is also stored in the picture itself (XMP tags)
Another scenario that makes syncing bidirectional important; I have a laptop and a workstation. My wife also has a laptop. We import pictures into f-spot from our digital cameras, friends galleries and celluar phones. Our goal is to share all pictures between us.
a test extension is available in f-spot SVN.
the extension should be working
