- I am very much against changing such things at a distribution level:
e.g. if someone is preparing screenshots for a book, the screnshots may
contain different text than the text users see if they use a different
  distribution.

- Otherwise I agree with the change, but note that it will be quite a lot of
work to check all applications; ideally the accelerator characters in dialogs
should be changed to avoid new duplicates that will inevitably appear.
Comment 3 Jakub Friedl 2006-06-21 09:44:49 UTC
I am not really sure whether this change is necessary. OK is not a Czech word, Budiž is nice, it is used also on Macintosh.

Both translations are easily comprehensible and I do not think there is a problem to use a different translation in GNOME and KDE. There are worse problems of this kind (like translation of tab - KDE uses 'záložky', which is very bad because the same word is used for bookmarks).

I would like to hear opinions of significant number of GNOME users on this change.
Comment 4 Jakub Friedl 2006-06-24 22:07:05 UTC
The problem of the poll mentioned in the #1 link is that all Linux users were asked, not GNOME users specifically. It is clear that KDE users which are used to a different translation would vote against the current GNOME translation.
Comment 5 Jakub Friedl 2006-06-24 22:23:35 UTC
I created a poll targeted at GNOME users at Czech Linux site http://www.abclinuxu.cz/blog/quid_novi/2006/6/23/137795

After being two days online, more than 2000 people visited the article. 191 users voted.

52% of the voters declared that they are using GNOME as their main desktop.

62% of these GNOME users voted for keeping current translation Budiž
19% of them declared that they want to change the translation to OK
19% of them don't care

47% (the sum is 99% - rounding error) of the voters declared that they do not use GNOME as main desktop.

36% of them voted for keeping current translation Budiž
26% of them declared that they want to change the translation to OK
38% of them don't care

If all voters are counted together:

49% of them voted for keeping current translation Budiž
22% of them declared that they want to change the translation to OK
28% of them don't care

Closing as NOTABUG
Comment 7 Miloslav Trmac 2006-06-24 22:34:16 UTC
While a difference between KDE and GNOME might not be a problem,
there is only one Firefox and only one OpenOffice.org; they are both
used together with GNOME and they both use OK.
Comment 8 Jakub Friedl 2006-06-24 22:43:41 UTC
Such a difference is not a problem. I think there are much bigger and more confusing differences between GNOME and non-GNOME apps. Both Budiž and OK are so clear translations, that any risk of any confusion is very small.

Comment 9 Jakub Friedl 2006-06-24 22:58:37 UTC
If I started some initiative to make translations compatible across environments, I would make something with TAB trichotomy (karta/panel/záložka). THAT can be really confusing. GNOMEs translation is imho the best, FFs usable, and KDEs unusable (there is a bug about it in KDEs bugzilla, but it seems down now).
