Description Lode Leroy 2005-04-15 14:41:19 UTC
I'd like to see a possibility to define styles for objects.
Now, if I draw 10 arroes, and want to change the style
(ie. make thicker) I want to change all of them consistenly.

I'd like to be able to define a style (i.e. "starts process")
that is (dotted, 0.4pt, green) and use that for each arrow.
After that I can change the definition once (dash-dotted,0.4pt,green)
without changing each arrow.

There are many features that we would like to add but we do not currently have
the time or resources to do so. We very much appreciate your interest, and if
you can provide patches to help implement any of these features it would be
extremely helpful.

Otherwise it would be very helpful if you can provide detailed descriptions of
the functionality and how you expect it to work including but not limited to
text descriptions, screenshots or glade mockups and information on how other
programs have implemented similar functionality. It is worth noting that some
of your requests could be extremely difficult and time consuming to implement.

Thanks again for your interet in Dia.

I will try and respond to each of your requests individually at some point, but
if you can double check to ensure there are no duplicates it would be helpful.

Sincerely

Alan Horkan

Looking at how Dia manages the colours and the fonts of all the different UML
objects looked really complicated and difficult to manage and I kept thinking
there had to be a better way to do it.

Recently work has been done to make it easier to set the properties across a
whole group of selected objects and that will help.

I have long used Styles in programs like LaTeX and Abiword but not been quite
sure how they would work in a diagramming program but I noticed OpenOffice.org
Draw does make use of Styles.
I have also been using Visio a lot recently trying to get ideas.

I eventually (during the past few weeks) I came to the conclusion that for all
the formatting settings to be really managable on any large scale diagram that
Styles will eventually be a necessity.

I suspect this will require immense amounts of work to implement (and I was
reluctant to request something such a huge fundamental change but you've dgone
and requested it already so I may as well join in) though maybe after 1.0 this
could be given some serious thought.

I moved this request to the "general" component. the objects component is used
to mean programmed objects like UML or ER rather than SVG Shape objects like the
Assorted Shapes.
