GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 165300
transform tools should clip result to bounding box of visible result
Last modified: 2018-05-24 11:24:30 UTC
Massive perspective changes without the "clip result" option selected could result in very resource intensive computing - e.g. computing time in minutes even on fast CPUs and swap file in gigabytes. This is not acceptable unless you really need it. That's why I'd like to suggest making "clip result" the default.
I disagree -- it is very common to do perspective changes and then move the result -- probably a lot more common than to do massive perspective changes. It is, however, desirable to allow the user to change the default for things like this. See also bug #165078.
Maybe the "clip result" is not the best solution, but I think this situation should be handled in some way. Technically the problem is in the size of the transformed layer. In my test with a sample picture from a 6MP digital camera it reached 180MP. A warning could be given before such computation starts. Similar warning is already implemented in the File->New dialog, if the file is too large, user has to confirm the action.
I think this is rather a request for a "clip to bounding box". "clip result" destroys visible layer data, "clip to bounding box" would preserve it, but not add more and more transparent area with each transformation.
Makes sense. Changing summary to indicate what is actually desired.
