Run GIMP.
Select the "Add text to the image" tool.
In the "Text Options" click on Font.
Font list appears with Sans as active font.
Try to scroll to top of list.
GIMP will crash and disappear without warning.
For what it is worth: I used the keyboard to scroll up to find out the last font
to appear at the top of the list.  It is Geeza Pro.  In other apps the font
listed before Geeza Pro is GB18030 Bitmap.

My computer is an Apple 15" PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.3.5

A google search indicates that the font GB18030Bitmap is malformed:  "claims 0
max advance but is fixed-pitch". This is breaking something in the font-handling
libraries that GIMP uses:  Freetype, Fontconfig, or Pango.  Your options are to
get rid of that font (it is Simplified Chinese), or see if you can upgrade to
more recent versions of the libraries I mentioned.  If you are using Pango 1.2,
then upgrading to Pango 1.4 has a particularly good chance of clearing up the
problem.

I am going to resolve this as NOTGNOME, but feel free to add further comments.

Updating Freetype is more likely to have a positive effect.

I had also reported this as bug #154274, and also determinted GB18030 to be the 
culprit font. My quick fix was to delete font GB18030 from system list using OSX 
Font Book utility. This allowed GIMP's Text Tool Font list to work without 
problems.

BTW, the font seems to have been installed with Open Office 1.1.2, as it resides 
in the Open Office 1.1.2 directory under share/fonts/truetype/NISC18030.ttf 
There are some related libconv .h source files for gb18030 installed in
/sw/src/libconv-1.9.2/lib/

I have no idea why Aaron doesn't provide an updated gimp.app package with newer
versions of freetype, fontconfig and libexif. It would also be nice to update
gtk+ to version 2.6 and of course gimp should be updated to version 2.2.4.
