GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 121598
Comment dialog should be non-modal.

[Originally reported as http://bugs.debian.org/208911] From: A Costa <agcosta@gis.net> Subject: gnumeric: Can't copy, cut or paste in "Edit Comments" text box Date: Sat, 06 Sep 2003 01:39:34 -0400 Package: gnumeric Version: 1.1.20-1 Severity: normal Right click on a cell, click "Edit Comments", a "Cell Comment" text box pops up. I can type in it, but can't copy, cut, or paste any text to, from, or within that text box. Hope this helps...
I can reproduce this with CVS HEAD. The only form of cut & paste that works for me is pasting from the X selection buffer. No ctrl-c / ctrl-v.
ctrl-c / ctrl-v doesn't work but copying and pasting via the context menu should work.
That's true, but that interface is hardly intuitive IMHO. I hadn't realised there was a context menu to the edit comments dialog before you mentioned it. I haven't used cell comments before, so I guess I'm looking at them from a somewhat fresh perspective. To me, some things about the comments interface are a bit counterintuitive / not user friendly: - The dialog title "Cell Comment" doesn't indicate the cell the comment is attached to. - The dialog is exclusionary: When editting a comment, I can't do anything else. In particular, I can't open a comment attached to another cell to copy/paste information from/to.
We should be able to support this in 1.3 with the new action based apis in gtk.
Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V work for me (1.2.13 / Debian sid)
Ah, Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V now work indeed. The UI could still do with the improvements I suggested though.
Retitling
In Windows 2000, using both 1.7 and 1.9, the comment does not appear when the cell is selected. I can't find help that relates directly to comments.
The comment should appear when you hover over the little triangle. Selecting the cell is not supposed to show the comment.
I believe the only item left here is that the comment dialog should be non-modal or at least non-exclusive. This is more difficult than it sounds: What happens if the name of a cell changes because rows are inserted or deleted?
