Description llordsmiff 2002-11-03 19:51:52 UTC
I was just thinking that it would be cool if the keyboard shortcut for
a tab was displayed in the tab itself. It could be right-aligned just
opposite of where it says "Terminal" so the new version would look:
"Terminal Alt-1" "Terminal Alt-2".

The reason I think this would be good is that it took a long time for me
to think of looking for a short cut. I finally found it once I went to
the go menu but I never really used that menu and hence I overlooked the
shortcut. If the shortcut had been present right there on the tabs, I
would have immediately noticed it. It sure is a lot faster than using
the mouse.

If this is too much then perhaps a tooltip that has the key accel would
be appropriate (when you hover over a tab it pops up "Terminal Alt-#".

Thanks for even reading this.

Certainly a tooltip would be reasonable. Would an underlined number
suffice for implying that it needs alt as a modifyer?

Oh, an even better idea. However, some users may not be familiar with
that notation as I had to think about it for more than a second. And I
actually didn't like the idea of the underlined number until I went
back to the terminal and noticed that the menu bar has the underlined
letters to indicate the accels. The difference here is that the user
can press alt, and then the letter second for the menu bar. However,
for the tabs you have to be pressing Alt + # at the same time so there
is a slight difference. On second thought, IMHO the "Alt+[1-9]"
notation would be better as it is the same as is used in the "Go" menu.

It turns out this has been proposed before, and the other bug actually
has a patch in it. Marking duplicate.
