GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 88679
Clock applet shouldn't display seconds by default
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
The clock applet currently by default shows seconds, and thus updates every second. From a usability prespective, I don't think it should, since this constant changing constantly demands and attracts visual attention and thus acts distracting from other tasks. Also, the exact second information probably isn't that useful in the majority of use cases of the panel clock. At least not useful enough to warrant it to be displayed by default.
on slower PC like my P75, it might consume too much CPU and likely to crash. (crashing panel)
CPU usage doesn't trigger a crash and besides i've got 10 clocks running with seconds at they nearly do use any cpu. (10 clocks just to test btw.. i am not insane.. a bit)
Should this be fixed yes or no ?
I asked on usability@gnome.org. Jeff sort of agreed that this was a problem, at least for him, so I think it's safe to change the default for this.

This should be the right patch!
I would agree with this patch, I think the seconds are more distracting than they are useful.
Patch committed to HEAD. Thanks Dennis.
