all I did was boot INIT 3, INIT 5, log in as root and update new box ...
logout as root, and in as a user.

1.4.x bug.  Moving to gnome-core.

This bug appears to be fixed in releases subsequent to 1.4.0.4. 
Upgrading to the current stable release should resolve your problem.
